Why choose the Sapphire FUE technique?

The underlying principle is still that of the FUE transplant: follicular units (the roots of the hair) are extracted one by one from the donor area, usually the back of the head, then reimplanted into the thinning zones. The real difference comes when the recipient channels are created, where sapphire blades replace the traditional metal ones.

The advantages of the sapphire blade

The sapphire blade has changed the game for hair transplants. Despite what the name suggests, it isn’t a precious stone but a synthetic sapphire made from crystallised aluminium oxide.

That composition gives it some fairly unique properties. Its hardness, well above that of surgical steel, keeps the edge sharp from the start of the procedure to the finish. Its ultra-smooth surface reduces the risk of inflammation afterwards.

There’s another benefit: sapphire holds its edge far longer than steel. Over a session that can run 5 to 7 hours, that really matters, as every incision stays as precise as the first, for an even result across the whole treated area.

Gentler healing

Cleaner incisions also mean less damage to the tissue around them. Fine and V-shaped, the openings made with sapphire cause little injury and calm the scalp’s inflammatory response. Healing tends to be more comfortable than with conventional instruments.

High, even hair density

The fineness of the V-shaped incisions makes it possible to bring the channels closer together without choking the blood supply that grafts need to survive. That allows 30 to 50 grafts per cm², the usual range for a well-performed FUE. The hair looks denser and more natural as a result.

On the most visible areas, like the hairline and the temples, every graft counts. Graft survival often exceeds 90%, thanks to micro-incisions that respect the natural angle and depth of the hair.

Sapphire FUE or standard FUE: what’s the difference?

Both methods share exactly the same extraction phase. Everything hinges on how the recipient channels are made: this is where Sapphire FUE stands apart, with finer, more precise incisions that reduce tissue trauma.

And compared with DHI?

The DHI technique uses a Choi implanter pen: it implants the follicle in a single gesture, with no separate channel-creation phase. It shines on areas that demand great precision, like the hairline, or for a no-shave transplant.

Sapphire FUE, meanwhile, stays the benchmark for extensive baldness that calls for a large volume of grafts over wide areas. DHI gives better control of the implantation angle on localised zones. Ideal candidates for Sapphire FUE

Sapphire FUE suits several profiles, each with a slightly different rationale.

Male pattern baldness: this hereditary hair loss, graded on the Norwood-Hamilton scale, is the number one indication. The technique works well from stages III to VII, restoring the hairline and adding density to the vertex (the crown of the head). Men with a dense donor area, at the back and sides, get the best results.

Female pattern hair loss: graded on the Ludwig scale, it shows up as diffuse thinning, mostly across the crown. Sapphire blades help you regain volume and density, particularly along the central parting. Women often keep a good-quality donor area, which works in their favour.

Traction alopecia: hairstyles worn too tight, repeated braids, extensions again and again… these habits pull on the hair and thin it mainly at the temples and front. A transplant restores these areas for good, provided you first give up the habits behind it.

Scarring alopecia: after a burn, an accident or surgery, grafts can be placed where the scar tissue will still take a blood supply. A thorough assessment is needed first to judge whether it’s feasible.

To be a good candidate, it helps to have stabilised hair loss, to be at least 25 years old (long enough for the baldness to settle into a predictable pattern), a donor area that’s full enough and sound general health.

The procedure step by step

The procedure takes place over a single day, in our partner clinic in Istanbul, under local anaesthetic. Here is what each stage looks like.

The pre-operative consultation happens the day before or the same morning. The surgeon examines your scalp with a trichoscope, sets the exact number of grafts and draws your future hairline with you.

Extraction takes about 2 to 3 hours. Using a rotary micro-punch of 0.7 to 1 mm, the surgeon removes the follicular units one by one. The grafts go straight into a nutrient preservation solution, to keep them healthy.

Creating the channels with sapphire takes 1 to 2 hours. This is the signature stage of Sapphire FUE: each micro-incision is made to the millimetre, respecting the natural growth angle (more acute at the hairline, more open at the vertex) and the direction specific to each area.

Implantation takes another 2 to 3 hours. Each follicle is placed gently, one by one, to aim for a natural, dense result.

The results, month by month

Knowing the regrowth timeline makes the months that follow easier to handle.

For the first two weeks, the grafts anchor into the scalp and the micro-scabs fall away on their own. Follow the aftercare instructions closely and use the right shampoo our team recommends.

Between weeks 2 and 6, something perfectly normal can happen: shock loss, the temporary shedding of the transplanted hairs. Don’t worry, it takes nothing away from the result. The follicles stay alive under the skin and rest for a while before starting up again.

From month 4, the first hairs grow back. Things speed up between months 6 and 9, when the density climbs noticeably.

The final results are there to see between 12 and 18 months after the procedure. The transplanted hair is there for good: it comes from an area that is genetically resistant to loss.
